Get ‘er brewed has sourced some very special oak barrels and in our first release you will have the opportunity to try something very unique, we believe this is another first to the local homebrew scene

The first oak cask we have worked on has had a beautiful scotch whiskey ageing in it for 29 years, this cask was emptied approximately 4 weeks ago so you can imagine how impressive the depth of aroma and flavours will be. We tried a little and its is very smooth and rich with a hint of sweetness. This whiskey retails for over 200 pounds per 70 cl bottle

We have tried a few ways of splitting the oak cask up and would like some feedback from you guys to see what you would prefer. We have tried some in 1” chunks and some in “domino’ style sizes, both are for sale in 100g and 500g packages, foil vacuum packed to preserve the aromas and flavor.

These beautiful oak pieces can be used to infuse some awesome aromas into your homebrews.

How did we break the cask up?

  • 1.The exterior was sanded until we brought it back to clean wood
  • 2.The rings were removed and the top and bottom removed
  • 3.The charred stripes of wood have then been cut into either dominos or chunks
  • 4.The chunks and dominos have then been foil vacuum packed

What can they be used for and how to use them?

  • 1.BEER - Used in the fermenter/ secondary or keg for adding depth of flavor to beer, it may be impractical for a small scale homebrewer to age beer in a cask due to the volume required, oak chunks and dominos are a simple and practical way to replicate this
  • 2.WHISKEY - Soak the chunks or dominos in plain alcohol to make great quality whiskey, it is possible to use these oak chunks or dominos again but the flavor will not be as intense and you will get more of an oak character
  • 3.WINE – oak is commonly used in wine making and this oak cask will add some beautiful notes to a wine
  • 4.How to sanitize them; boil, soak, roast or steam are the options, we say keep it simple and add the foil packaged cubes to a pot of boiling water and allow the heat for 15 minutes to sterilize prior to opening and adding to your homebrew. Some folk suggest they don’t require any sanitization
  • 5.Taste frequently to gauge how you prefer the oak and whiskey flavours, time will alter the flavours greatly
  • 6.How much oak chunks or dominos to use is still fairly new to us so we have experiments ongoing in the warehouse, we have read that additions vary greatly so we are asking you the brewer to guage by taste testing regularly and removing when you have a sufficient amount of infusion of flavours
  • 7.The oak chunks after use can be dried and used in a smoker
  • 8.Fast track options are available, some folk have made a tea with the oak chunks by boiling them in water and then adding the tea to the homebrew
